The Domain Name Lowdown -
What's Your Name?
The two main rules for choosing domain names are to keep them short
and keep the domain names relevant. For instance, if your site is going
to be about cats it would not be wise to acquire dogs.com.
There are some ways to obtain a free domain name, but usually
if you also buy a hosting package. In that case 'free' is hardly free
since the cost is hidden in the cost of the hosting. If your interest
is internet marketing, you are likely to need to buy several different
names, one for each area of interest.
If you are based in the UK, HeartInternet
can provide names starting from 99p. Over the years I've bought names
from many sources, but have recently settled on GoDaddy
as my favourite. Their name suggestion tool is also very handy.
However the real killer, domain name suggestion tool is at NameBoy.
This tool is guaranteed to come up with many more names than you could
ever have dreamed of.
If you like to keep things simple, by all means take your hosting from
the same source as you bought your domain names. But if you want to
keep everything at as low a cost as possible when starting out, it is
usually better to keep them separate.
