Keywords, Keyphrases and Market Research

What do people want? People want answers to their problems.
"How do I train a disobedient dog?"
"How do I cope with asthma?"
"How do I earn money at home?"
To get a flavour of what these problems might be, we are going to hang around forums, read endless posts and basically listen. Then we are going to test out these ideas by finding out what people search for on the Internet.

So what are people looking for on the Internet? Since over 80% of all online transactions begin with a keyword search, it is of paramount importance to know. This is where keyword research comes in. There are several tools available which attempt to answer these questions.

But let's start with a warning. Despite all the numbers and ratios and talk of accurate databases, keyword research remains a mixture of both art and science. The bare results from keyword research need human intuition. The principle reasons for this are that firstly, the results are based on relatively small sample sizes of the total internet searches. This means that, in particular, the smaller the number of searches for a key phrase, the more inaccurate the results can be. Secondly, the results are distorted by more and more people using these tools to discover profitable keywords, together with the distortion originating from automated rank checking and spiders.

The available keyword research tools have different strengths and weaknesses. Some are more suited to PPC campaigns, some more suited to SEO. In the final analysis, the choice of tool comes down to the one which suits you best and most experienced marketers use several. I can't recommend one for your individual needs, so my only real recommendation is to try them out until you find the ones which suit you best.

I have always got on well with WordTracker. Wordtracker has a 7 day free trial. Very useful is the Keyword Research Guide which is free to download. There is also a Free Keyword Tool on the site.

Web CEO is also one of my own favourites. One of Web CEO's great strengths is the training they offer free at their Web CEO University. It also includes web site promotion software features.

You can claim a free Niche Finder and Keyword Tracker Account from Hexatrack.

I first tried KeywordDiscovery after Jill Whalen of HighRankings.com said she liked it. I suggest you read the user manual before starting on a free trial.

KeywordElite boasts that it is "the only keyword research tool that's 100% proven to uncover massively profitable niches with a single mouse click, in under 17 seconds flat."

KeywordCountry interestingly enables the user to predict their AdSense earnings before they target a keyword.

Beyond those, here are two related free resources to start you thinking:

l3xicon.com may stimulate your ideas for potential keywords.
Quintura.com has the fascinating See & Find™, which will help to exercise your creativity in choosing potential keywords.

If you've reached this far down the page and you feel your struggling and that it's all going to be too complicated, help is at hand. There is a comprehensive suite of keyword research tools included in Search it! as part of the SiteBuild it! package. You can try the free version of Search it! here: Search it!
(I wish I had had an all-in-one solution for web marketing when I started years ago.)

If you still need an extra angle, I'd be surprised, but you could also try some from this list:

Let's move on to finding products which these hungry people need.

That's Products on the left menu.

By the way, once you've found all these magic keywords and kephrases, it's worth having some professional advice on how to use them when you start writing. I've been a longtime fan of Karon Thackston and she has written an authoritative guide on how to 'Increase the Power of Your Search Engine Copywriting With Proven Keyword Optimization Techniques'. So, even if you don't feel you need it yet, have a look for later.

Keep up, we're moving on to Products :-)
